Health Hazards At Home: 8 Ways to Detoxify Your Living Space

When you hear the word “detox”, the first thing that’ll pop in your mind is likely the process of eliminating toxins from your body. However, that’s not the only kind of detox you can do if you care about your health. There are many health hazards that can be found in our homes, which is why it’s important to detox your living space just as you would detox your body. So, to help you get started, here are eight ways to detox your home.

Start from the bottom

First things first, if you want to detox your home, you should implement some hygiene-related rules. For example, there should be no shoes allowed inside the house, since many harmful particles can enter your home on your shoes. It’s a better idea to go barefoot or have slippers prepared for all your family members and potential guests. Also, place your floor mats vertically by your entryway – it might look odd, but this way, more dirt from your shoes would stay on the mat.

Use eco-friendly cleaning products

It’s easy to go shopping and buy the first cleaning product you see, but not many of those products are actually healthy for your home. With a bit of patience, you could just as easily make your own eco-friendly cleaning products that would do the same job with the same amount of efficiency. Plus, they wouldn’t harm your health or damage the environment because any green products can be made just by using basic home ingredients, like vinegar instead of bleach, baking soda for scrubbing the tiles, and lemon for scent.

Reduce the use of plastics

Bisphenol A (BPA), which can be found in plastics, has been linked to cancer, and some plastics also contain phthalates, which can lead to developmental and endocrine issues. Also, plastics take forever to disintegrate in nature, so they can be harmful to the environment as well. This is why you should avoid plastic food packaging whenever you can. Avoid plastic shower curtains, and if you use dry cleaning, don’t use the plastic wrap after the cleaning. Moreover, when you go shopping, take your own reusable bag instead of stacking plastic bags at home.

Keep the air clean

There can be many harmful particles in the air inside your home if you don’t ventilate it properly. So, whenever the weather allows it, open the windows and let in some fresh air. You should also add plenty of plants to your living space since they can help purify the air and flowers make your home smell nice. Finally, you should get a good HEPA air purifier, perhaps one for every room, so you can rest assured that the air inside your home is as healthy as it could be.

Take care of your bedding

Your bedding contains dead skin, grime, and dust, which is normal in small amounts. However, if you don’t wash and change your bedding often enough, all those things could cause many health problems, from acne to asthma. This is why you should clean your bedding at least once every two weeks.

Keep dust to a minimum

Dust is something that you can never get rid of completely, but you can still reduce the amount of dust you have inside your home. The way to do this is to simply clean more frequently – mop all surfaces and vacuum every room once a week. Also, look for a vacuum with a HEPA filter, as they are the best in terms of capturing all the harmful particles.

Avoid non-stick kitchenware

Non-stick kitchenware can come in handy sometimes. However, you should know that Teflon contains perfluorinated chemicals (PFC’s), which can be very harmful. Research has shown that in some cases, they can even lead to cancer. So, stick to the traditional pans and pots and look for healthier ways to make your food not stick to the surface.

Think about your choice of materials

Your carpets can be filled with various toxins, especially if they are made of synthetic materials. This is why you should stick to the natural materials, like cotton or wool. Plus, natural materials can make your home look cozier and more welcoming. In general, you should use untreated fabrics whenever you can, and you should clean and vacuum your carpets at least once a week. In order to lead a healthy lifestyle, you should not only detoxify your body from time to time but your home as well. So, go green whenever you can, stay away from plastics and non-stick kitchenware, clean your home frequently, and your living space will be a much more pleasant place to live in.
