WYL Take Ownership Ep: Sapphira Martin

Having been featured in publications such as Essence, Refinery29, and Revolt, Sapphira Martin is the founder of SassBoxx, a monthly subscription service that offers products exclusively from businesses owned by women of color.

In addition to running SassBoxx, Sapphira is also a co-host of, “The Black Girl Podcast” along with the likes of Scottie Beam, Gia Peppers, Bex, and Alysha. In this episode of our Take Ownership Podcast, Sapphira chats with us about working with people in the community, balancing relationships, and starting The Black Girl Podcast.

Working With People in The Community...

Growing up in New York City, Sapphira’s parents would often take her and her brother to street festivals. At these festivals, Sapphira would be exposed to business owners and local vendors selling products such as Shea Butter and African clothing. Through these experiences, Sapphira would eventually launch SassBoxx as a means of curating different brands and reaching back to work with different people in the community.

Balancing Relationships...

“My relationships with my co-hosts from The Black Girl Podcast and my relationship with my mother are are very different” says Sapphira. “When it comes to the podcast, we talk about everything. We have all struggled with going to therapy, bettering ourselves, and navigating our career paths.” In addition, Sapphira also mentions that co-hosting The Black Girl Podcast has helped her to better understand Black women. “Co-hosting The Black Girl Podcast has helped me to understand the importance of building sisterhood and genuine partnerships with other Black women” says Sapphira.

Starting The Black Girl Podcast…

The Black Girl Podcast began after Sapphira sought out relationship advice from her co-workers at Hot 97. While in the hallway, Ebro suggested that Sapphira and her co-workers start a podcast. Not only did Ebro make the suggestion, but he also gave them the name, “The Black Girl Podcast.” These same co-workers would eventually go on to be her co-hosts for The Black Girl Podcast. While at work, Sapphira, Scottie, Gia, Bex, and Alysha recorded four episodes and launched their podcast on December 21, 2016.
