In this episode of our Take Ownership Podcast, our very own hosts, Kelley Green
Cultural Significance of Black History Month...
“I think that Black History Month is a good time for remembrance” says Kelley. “It’s important to remember how our ancestors contributed to the present.” In addition, Ofo mentions that due to everything we go through as a group of people economically, socially, and emotionally, having one month to reflect on our dopeness means something. “We need these moments to be proud” says Ofo.
Self-Care
“If there is a time of the year to recenter yourself and figure out what is really valuable to you, it’s this time of year” says Ofo. “I want to use this month to recenter.” Kelley also mentions that making it a point to journal, sit, think, and check-in with herself is really important to her. “No matter what happens, I get to choose how I react to things and I get to choose how I navigate the day.”
Get To Know Our History and Our People…
“Do some research” says Kelley. “Get to know the creators, artists, inventors, novelists, game changers, etc. Get to know not only what they produced but also their stories. See what they have done to get to where they are now. Study their struggles as well as their triumphs as well as how they may have went about navigating America.”
In addition, Kelley mentions the importance of supporting black businesses and checking in with ourselves. “Whether it’s yoga, meditating, journaling, praying, or sleeping, check in with yourself” says Kelley. “Be appreciative, be celebratory, and support others.”
