Better known as Coco and Breezy, these twin sisters have garnered the attention of megastars such as Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, and the late Prince.   Having designed eyewear for some of the top names in entertainment, Coco and Breezy Eyewear is now available in over 300 stores and counting. From having customers pay for sunglasses through PayPal to becoming well-known designers in their own right, Coco and Breezy are only continuing to strengthen their brand in ways that are already having an impact on mainstream culture.   In this episode of our Take Ownership Podcast, Coco and Breezy sit down and talk to us about having the support of their parents, being inspired by design, and DJ’ing at Afropunk.

Having The Support of Their Parents...

Our parents are our number one fans,” says Coco and Breezy. “They truly support us emotionally and we think that is more important than anything.” Growing up, Coco and Breezy’s parents always let them express themselves. “They didn’t keep us in a box,” says Coco and Breezy. “They pushed us to go for any ideas we had. Our parents allowed us to be ourselves. They let us dye our hair in high school. They let us wear thick black gothic boots and blue lipstick to church. They always stood up for us!”

Inspired by Design...

“I always carry a notebook with me,” says Breezy, who is the head designer for Coco and Breezy Eyewear. “I get super inspired by art, buildings, architecture, shadows, and shapes.” Coco adds, “I like to see what people are wearing as well. I’m always staring at people’s glasses.” In regards to learning about the process of designing their own eyewear, Coco and Breezy mention that their other co-founder has a background in architecture. This is what allowed them to learn about the three-dimensional aspect of designing products. If not for their co-founder, Coco and Breezy would have had no idea how a pair of glasses were made. “No one in the eyewear industry told us anything,” says Coco and Breezy. “We had to figure it out.”

DJ’ing at Afropunk…

“We’ve been attending Afropunk for years,” says Coco and Breezy. “We started going to Afropunk in 2010. That whole crew of people who go to Afropunk are people like us. Going from attending Afropunk to being on stage and directing the vibes for thousands of people was so crazy! Our green room tent was right next to H.E.R” and they also met Miguel. Coco and Breezy also talk about what it was like on the other side of attending Afropunk as performers, instead of attendees. “We remember when we were the people in the crowd watching the artists and knowing how much it meant to us. With us being on stage, we had to make sure that we projected everything that we wanted when we would see people in the audience.”   Be sure to check out the full-episode HERE and CONNECT with us on social! _________________________ (Uh • Kway • Us) Aquaus Kelley is a forward-thinking brand strategist, curator, and educator.
