With the desire to engage Black women in higher thought, Lindsey Day and Nkrumah Farrar decided that they wanted to speak to the true essence and crown of Black women. As the founders of CRWN Magazine, Lindsey and Nkrumah noticed that the sophistication of Black women was neither being reflected or respected within the world of media. As a result, CRWN was born.   On a mission to showcase the diversity of Black women, CRWN Magazine exists to create a progressive dialogue around natural hair and the women who wear it. Having been featured in outlets such as 21ninety, Blavity, and HuffPost, Lindsey and Nkrumah are not only aiming to make sure that we continue the fight to ensure our seats at the table, but more importantly, they are empowering a generation to take ownership in creating tables of their own. In this episode of our Take Ownership Podcast, Lindsey and Nkrumah sit down and chat with us about building CRWN as a platform, knowing ourselves, and the future of CRWN.

CRWN as a Platform...

The biggest function of CRWN as a platform is to bring light to the Black women that are doing amazing things,” says Nkrumah. “It’s a place where they can be celebrated and their work can be respected.” Lindsey goes on to add, “We focus on depth. We have to push beyond shallow face value representation.” Another reason why Lindsey and Nkrumah felt so strongly about creating CRWN is because they sensed a lack of meaningful storytelling. “If there is a story, a lot of times you will find that they are decoding or demystifying some sort of Black experience for another,” says Lindsey. “We ain’t about that!”

Knowing Ourselves...

“At various points in our lives, all of us may have found ourselves trying to do something that is outside of ourselves instead of leaning into those things that make us...US,” says Lindsey. “We live in a culture where we want to be hot immediately and look like we are doing something that is dope. It’s important to be comfortable in our skin first before we try to inspire others.”   In addition, Lindsey also touches on the importance of collaboration. “Know yourself and know how you can bring that value to serve others in a way that is bigger than you as an individual,” says Lindsey. “There are people that need your skills, heart, value, etc. I want to collaborate with another platform in a dope way or create something that sits somewhere that is not already created.”

The Future of CRWN…

“CRWN Magazine is arguably going to be the most important platform for Black women in the future,” says Nkrumah. “If you imagine Black women in the future in terms of the platform they stand by and aspire to be on...it’s CRWN Magazine. If we keep our head down and we continue to be sincere and committed to creating and reflecting the culture, this undoubtedly will be the most important media platform for Black women in the world.”   Be sure to check out the full-episode HERE and CONNECT with us on social!   _________________________ (Uh • Kway • Us) Aquaus Kelley is a forward-thinking brand strategist, curator, and educator.
